About visiting the Maldives, getting to Ukulhas, and staying with us at Sandy Blooms.
Ukulhas is in the North Ari Atoll, roughly 72 km southwest of Malé. Here is everything you need to know about the journey.
You fly into Velana International Airport (MLE) in Malé, the Maldives' main international gateway. All major airlines connect here from hub cities in the Middle East, South Asia, and Southeast Asia.
There are two options:
Public ferry — the most affordable option. Ferries depart from the Malé Ferry Terminal (a short taxi or water taxi ride from the airport). The journey takes approximately 2.5 to 3 hours. Ferries run on set days, so check the schedule in advance.
Speedboat transfer — faster (around 45–60 minutes) and more flexible with timings. We can arrange a private or shared speedboat for you. See our transfers page for details and pricing.
The public ferry to Ukulhas typically departs from Malé on Sunday, Tuesday, and Thursday. Return trips from Ukulhas to Malé are usually on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday. Schedules can change seasonally, so we recommend confirming closer to your travel date. We are happy to help you check.
It depends on your origin. Common flight times: from Dubai or Doha around 4 hours, from London around 10–11 hours (usually with a stopover), from Singapore or Kuala Lumpur around 3.5–4 hours, from India as short as 2 hours from southern cities.
Yes. We can arrange speedboat transfers to and from Velana International Airport. Simply let us know your flight details when you book. Visit our transfers page to request or enquire.
Ukulhas is one of the most celebrated local islands in the Maldives — known for its house reef, clean streets, and genuine community.
Ukulhas is a local inhabited island, not a resort island. You stay in a real Maldivian community, eat at local cafés, and interact with people who actually live here. It is consistently rated one of the cleanest and most eco-conscious islands in the country.
The house reef — reachable by swimming directly from the beach — is world-class. Nurse sharks, sea turtles, rays, and vibrant coral are regular sightings. And because it is a local island, prices are a fraction of what you would pay at a private resort.
Yes, Ukulhas is a dry island — alcohol is not available on the island itself, as is the case with all local inhabited islands in the Maldives. If alcohol is important to your trip, resort islands operate differently, but we find most guests enjoy the island entirely without it.
Ukulhas is a Muslim community and we ask guests to dress respectfully outside the guesthouse and beach areas. This means covering shoulders and knees when walking through the island village. Swimwear is perfectly fine at the designated tourist beach and in the water.
Ukulhas has a designated bikini beach where normal beach attire is welcome.
The official currency is the Maldivian Rufiyaa (MVR), though US dollars are widely accepted for tourist-facing payments. Local cafés and shops may prefer Rufiyaa for small purchases.
Ukulhas has a Bank of Maldives ATM on the island. Most guesthouses including Sandy Blooms accept card payments for bookings.
Very much so. Ukulhas is an exceptionally safe and welcoming island. Solo travellers — including solo women — regularly visit and feel entirely comfortable. The island is small, walkable, and the community is friendly. Families with children are also very welcome.
The dry season (November to April) brings calm seas, clear skies, and excellent visibility for snorkelling and diving — this is peak season.
The wet season (May to October) sees more rain and rougher seas, but the island is quieter, prices are lower, and marine life is still abundant. Manta rays are particularly common in the North Ari Atoll from May through November. Many guests find the shoulder months of May and October to be the sweet spot.
Yes. Sandy Blooms provides complimentary Wi-Fi throughout the property. Mobile coverage on Ukulhas is generally good on Dhiraagu and Ooredoo networks. You can buy a local SIM card at the airport in Malé for affordable data if needed.
Everything about checking in, your room, and what to expect during your time with us.
Standard check-in is from 2:00 PM and check-out is by 12:00 PM (noon). If you are arriving on an early ferry or need to leave later, let us know and we will do our best to accommodate you — luggage storage is available.
All rooms include complimentary Wi-Fi, air conditioning, daily housekeeping, and a welcome amenity. Breakfast can be added at the time of booking. Excursions, transfers, and other activities are booked separately.
Yes. We offer breakfast as an add-on to your stay, featuring a mix of local and international options. Alternatively, the local cafés on the island serve excellent Maldivian breakfasts at very reasonable prices — we are happy to point you to our favourites.
Our standard policy allows free cancellation up to 7 days before arrival. Cancellations within 7 days may incur a charge of one night's stay. Please refer to your booking confirmation for the specific terms that apply to your reservation, as these may vary by rate type or season.
Please let us know your dietary requirements at the time of booking. We will do our best to accommodate vegetarian, vegan, gluten-free, and other needs. The local island cuisine is naturally seafood and rice heavy, which suits many diets well.
Yes, we offer complimentary luggage storage on the day of check-out, so you can spend the rest of the day on the beach or island before your ferry or transfer departs.
Ukulhas and the surrounding North Ari Atoll offer some of the finest marine experiences in the world.
Yes — this is one of Ukulhas' greatest assets. The house reef begins just metres from the shoreline and is accessible directly from the beach without a boat. Nurse sharks, sea turtles, rays, and colourful reef fish are common sightings even for beginner snorkellers.
The North Ari Atoll is one of the best places in the world to see manta rays. They are most reliably spotted from May through November at cleaning stations in the atoll. We offer manta ray excursions by boat — check our excursions page for availability.
Whale shark sightings are possible in the South Ari Atoll, a short speedboat ride away. We can arrange whale shark excursions depending on season and availability. The South Ari Atoll is one of the very few places in the world with a resident whale shark population year-round.
We offer a range of curated excursions including sandbank picnics, dolphin watching, sunset cruises, fishing trips, diving, uninhabited island visits, and more. All are bookable through our website or directly with our team. See the full list on our excursions page.
Not at all. The house reef snorkelling is suitable for all comfort levels — the water is calm and shallow close to shore and deepens gradually. Life jackets and snorkelling equipment are available. For excursions involving open water, basic swimming ability is recommended, but our guides will always look after you.
Yes. There are dive sites within easy reach of Ukulhas offering everything from shallow reef dives to drift dives with sharks and rays. We can connect you with trusted local dive operators for both certified divers and beginners looking for a Discover Scuba experience.
Visas, health, electricity, and the everyday practicalities of visiting the Maldives.
Most nationalities receive a free 30-day visa on arrival at Velana International Airport. No advance application is needed. You will need a valid passport, a confirmed return ticket, proof of accommodation (your Sandy Blooms booking confirmation works), and sufficient funds for your stay.
There are no mandatory vaccinations required to enter the Maldives. Standard travel health precautions apply — stay hydrated, use sun protection, and bring any personal medications you require. The island has a basic health centre for minor issues; for serious medical needs, Malé or Maafushi have more comprehensive facilities.
The Maldives uses 230V / 50Hz with Type G plugs (the same three-pin square plug used in the UK). Adaptors for Type C and Type A are also found in many guesthouses including ours. We recommend bringing a universal adaptor to be safe.
The Maldives operates on Maldives Time (MVT), which is UTC+5. There is no daylight saving time. The sun rises around 6:00 AM and sets around 6:00 PM year-round, giving you long, bright days.
Yes, prescription medication is allowed. Carry it in its original packaging with a doctor's note or prescription if possible. Note that certain substances that may be legal elsewhere are prohibited in the Maldives — if in doubt, check the Maldives Customs regulations before travelling.
Tap water on local islands including Ukulhas is desalinated and generally fine for showering, but we recommend drinking bottled or filtered water. We provide drinking water in your room and are happy to refill your bottle throughout your stay.
Travel insurance is not a legal requirement to enter the Maldives, but we strongly recommend it. A good policy should cover medical emergencies, trip cancellation, and travel delays. Given the island location, medical evacuation cover is particularly worth having.
Our team is happy to help with anything not covered above.
